The Poker Rake

Poker is one of the most popular card games. This game pits a player against one or multiple players. It usually requires some form of contribution called a rake. To win the poker card game one needs to earn more than the amount they put in to the game besides defeating their opponents. The term rake on the other hand has several meanings in a poker game. But it is generally used by casinos to refer to a scaled commission, which they take from poker games. This fee plan normally used to generate revenue for the casino since the poker game is limited to the players’ bets and the casinos can only charge a fee for hosting the poker game.

The rake or scaled commission is usually charged as a percentage or non-percentage rate of the total or portion amount of the sum contributed by players. But it can also be based on a predetermined per poker game rate set by the casino. It is also not a bad idea to know that while some poker games take a standard rake most community poker card games do not take rake commissions when the game has a “no flop”. The term rake can also be used to refer the poker game fee collected per game, per drop or even as poker tournament entry fees. For most part the levied commission is used to cover operation costs of the establishment offering the porker service. Conventional casinos use it pay staff, game license, space rent, building maintenance and equipments used for the game. Mean while online casinos make use of rakes to support its payroll and software required for operations.

Some poker players usually have a hard time figuring out the amount of rake charged per game pot. For those who play a percentage raked game this is simple because all they have to do is add up the total contributions in the pot won. Then simply calculate the percentage of rake payment required. This amount is usually between five and ten percent of the sum contributed by each player. Rakes are usually take by the house incrementally during the game but are deducted from the total collection before awarding the wining player the pot. The rake taken each time a game does not have a winner or loser reduces the each player’s contribution and the total sum that the winner will be awarded at the end of the game.

Losing card gamers who play no flop in a raked poker game also increase the scaled commission charged. Beside this it reduces their pot equity and value of the sum to be awarded to winning.  There are also other several ways through which rakes are collected including dead drop, subscription and time collection. Pot rakes are physically deducted by casino dealers who remove chips form pot collection as the poker game is played. Time rake gets collected semi hourly, while subscription and drop dead rake is paid before poker games.
